Call the midterms

Same idea as the rest of the site: say what you think before you know, then check the receipts. Here the receipt arrives on one night — 71 days from now.

The question is who you think will win, not who you want to. A prediction can be checked against what happens; a preference can't be checked against anything.

The two that decide everything else

All 435 seats are up. Which party holds the majority in the next Congress?

44 people have called this. What they said shows once you've called it yourself.

The Senate map

35 seats

Every seat on the ballot, not a shortlist. A third of the Senate stands every two years and the Constitution decides which third, so this list is a fact rather than a judgement about which races are worth your attention — including the two special elections for seats currently filled by appointment.

Does how you vote predict how you call it?

39 people

Everyone here with a Needle reading and at least one call, grouped by which way their legislative record leans.

This describes the people on VoteWire and nobody else. They chose to be here, they chose which bills to weigh in on, and there aren't many of them — so it is not a measure of the country, and any resemblance to one would be luck.

Argue about it

One thread for the whole midterms — the races, the map, what the calls above are missing. Your call on a race stays private until you've made it, but nothing stops you making the case here first.

Should be interesting to see how they pan out - wonder if the DSA has done more damage to the democrats than the media are allowing for.

How this works

You call the party, not the candidate. Candidate lists move until the last minute — a withdrawal or a ballot ruling would leave every prediction on that race unscoreable. The party that wins the seat is settled on the night and stays settled.

You can't see a race's split until you've called it. If the running total were visible first, later calls would partly be a reaction to earlier ones, and the total would measure who showed up first as much as what anyone thinks. Change your mind as often as you like until election day; after that it's frozen, because a prediction you can edit afterwards isn't one.

No number here is a poll. It's a count of people on this site, which is a small group that selected itself. Every total says how many people it's out of, and none of them appear until at least fifteen have called.
